STOP THE SHEIN POP UP IN PERTH NOW

We, the residents of Perth, are requesting The Royal Agricultural Society of WA reconsider SHEIN's pop-up event at the Claremont Showgrounds. Hosting this event implies prioritising profit over sustainability leading to negative impacts within OUR environment and community.

SHEIN's impact is devastating for the environment, the garment workers, our community and our health.

WE DESERVE BETTER.

Recent studies found that the multibillion ultra fast fashion brand has produced and sold shoes that contained 428 times the permitted levels of phthalates and some bags that contained 153 times the permitted levels. Phthalates are the chemicals used to soften plastic to make it appear more like leather. However prolonged exposure to these chemicals, though creating garments, or wearing them, can lead to “respiratory problems, cancer and endocrine disruption”.

Australians throw away the equivalent weight of four Sydney Harbour Bridges in clothing every year?  Which is equivalent to more than 200,000 tonnes of clothing*

This unsustainable trend is fuelled by fast fashion giants like SHEIN, whose planned pop-up event at the Claremont Showgrounds contradicts a healthy future for our environment on a local and global scale.

Not only does SHEIN contribute to the fast fashion industry, it is known to have unethical practices such as poor labour conditions, culturally insensitive designs and disregard for animal welfare.

But there's hope!

Countries like France push industries towards sustainable practices, while others offer discounts for garment repairs, all while reducing textile waste.

We can do the same!  We do not need another fast fashion giant to contribute to waste in Perth and by proxy, the Global South.

Hold Claremont Showgrounds, Corporations, and Policymakers Accountable for Sustainable Fashion!

Together, let's send a powerful message! We refuse to accept unsustainable practices in our community. By boycotting SHEIN's pop-up event and urging Claremont Showgrounds to reject similar events in the future, we can demand change from corporations and policymakers.

Join your fellow Perth residents in creating a sustainable fashion future for ourselves and future generations!

Sign this petition and demand change!
